In the lanes of luxury

STEYN CITY- Forget Douw Steyn's palatial abode, gatehouses are Steyn City's real draw card.

Steyn City lifestyle estate has had luxury in mind since its inception.

Tycoon Douw Steyn’s mansion on the 810-ha piece of land is estimated to be valued at R250 million. But Steyn's eventual neighbours in the estate need not worry that their investment will never compare to Steyn's palazzo.

Steyn City, currently under construction along the Jukskei River between William Nicol Drive and Cedar Road, will comprise residential, commercial, retail and leisure components across its 2 000 acres.

Out of this, 1 000 acres will be dedicated woodlands. But luxury and a mini-forest wedged between Dainfern and Diepsloot is not the only thing Steyn City has going for it, the real attraction will be the two entry and exit gatehouses along the estate boundary.

Each will feature 14 lanes, seven dedicated as entry points, and seven to vehicles exiting. The developers of Steyn City are committed to improving the surrounding infrastructure to ensure local stakeholders also benefit from the development. The gatehouses, according to developers, will ensure ease of traffic flow at the William Nicol Drive and Cedar Road entry points.

The mammoth 14 lane gatehouses are a first in South Africa in terms of capacity of vehicles able to use it. It also serves to combat any form of traffic congestion caused by potential queues in or out of Steyn City.

If size is not enough, architects drew on principles of classicism for the design, featuring sandstone-clad walls, arches and classical colonnades. The gatehouses also have office space.

“A great deal of research was done into the security systems at South African lifestyle estates and gatehouses so as to offer the most sophisticated yet unobtrusive features at Steyn City. The intention is to create an environment where residents are not conscious of the security that is in place, but will be able to enjoy the relaxed and peaceful lifestyle of yesteryear.” said Giuseppe Plumari, chief executive officer of Steyn City Properties.
