Exciting times ahead for animal shelter

CHARTWELL - Ark Animal Centre in Chartwell is gearing up for change with a host of new developments at the shelter and some exciting new projects being planned.

Cara Otto of the shelter explained that Ark has come a long way from running their rescue venture out of a garage.

The shelter which is now the leading care facility for pregnant dogs and puppies in South Africa will soon be opening their welfare clinic which will offer veterinary assistance to disadvantaged communities.

Their vet, Dr Taryn Bright, is a recent graduate and is well on her way to becoming a dedicated welfare vet. Even though the clinic has not yet officially opened, Bright is treating a litter of puppies which were diagnosed with the Parvo virus.

The shelter has joined with FourPaws animal shelter, which is also based in Fourways in an endeavour to do more rescue projects, particularly a sterilisation campaign on cats in disadvantaged communities.

Otto explained that the partnership is good because Ark has a good homing rate but do not have as good a rescue rate while FourPaws has a good rescue rate but does not have a good homing rate.

Ark Animal Centre also runs adoption weekends where members of the public can visit the shelter, play with the dogs and puppies and hopefully take one or two home. The shelter is making the experience even better with the addition of a cafe called #Smoothies and the construction of a dog walk park on the property. Ark is also building a duck pond at the shelter where they will house a flock of rescue ducks with disabilities from waterways around Fourways.

The shelter currently has a host of puppies and dogs which are looking for good homes.
