Maule sells out

MONTECASINO - If you're shopping for a funnyman, a Maule would be a good place to start.

Darren Maule is building his own empire, as evident by a whole evening dedicated to him at Parker’s Comedy and Jive at Montecasino on 20 May.

The evening was part marketing strategy, part party, and all comedy.

Maule has been at the forefront of KwaZulu-Natal’s airways since joining East Coast Radio as their breakfast show host in 2011. Since then he has become a hero to over 1 million listeners, and he is seen as one of the leading stand-up comics in South Africa.

On air, his popularity has blossomed so much that he has just signed a three-year contract to stay with the regional radio station, due to the popularity of his show.

Elsewhere in the country, a list of television credits doesn’t hurt Maule and he is a regular emcee at events, host at some of the biggest parties in the country, and he even picks up the mic inbetween to perform his one-of-a-kind stand-up comedy.

His intelligent repartee coupled with his goofy take on the world around him has elevated him into cultural hero status, and the world is taking note.

During the evening at Monte, Universal Music’s South Africa division sent through a signed album of Katy Perry’s Prism – just because Maule is a fan and often tweets the songstress.

But his heart will always be in comedy, and once a month he still comes up to Johannesburg to be a host at Parker’s two comedy clubs in the city.

But mostly his charm is his effortlessness of existing: he’s just funny, without even trying.

On 7 June Maule, Dave Levinsohn, Lihle Lindzy and Jason Goliath will be performing at Parker’s Comedy and Jive.
