Arteye hosts renowned photographer

FOURWAYS - Arteye Gallery in the Design Quarter hosted an evening with renowned photographer David Ballam.

Sanele Manqele of the gallery, explained that Arteye has always selected artworks which are not only aesthetically appealing but also express a different perspective to the work one usually sees in the art market. “David Ballam has shown a brilliance not only in his mastery of the photographic medium, but also his unique ability to capture his subject matter,” she said.

Manqele said that Ballam uses found objects in his work which are both obscure and natural, and this results in highly layered and textured imagery.

“Ballam’s work shows a very evident interplay between man, animal and the South African environment,” she said. “His photography creates a dichotomy between the romantic African landscape and the harshness and crudeness of the context in which he shoots.

“The inherent beauty in Ballam’s work has to be his ability to take broken and ‘dead’ subjects and give them life again through their composition and the relationship with that which surrounds them.”
