Job seekers face deportation

LONEHILL - Douglasdale police in conjunction with security companies in the Fourways area conducted an operation to round up job seekers outside Builders Warehouse in Lonehill.

According to Warrant Officer Balan Muthan the police had received numerous complaints from community members about job seekers outside the hardware store harassing customers, gambling and littering.

According to Muthan the police managed to arrest 30 to 40 individuals who were found to be foreign nationals. The job seekers could not produce the necessary paperwork to prove that they were in the country legally.

Muthan explained that the job seekers would be transferred to a refugee camp before deportation.

“These operations will be held on a regular basis as the police have committed to cleaning up that specific area,” Muthan said.
