Kerbside recycling in Kyalami

KYALAMI - The Greater Kyalami Conservancy (Gecko) and residents' associations in the Kyalami area are partnering with a Diepsloot co-operative to offer kerbside recycling.

The Diepsloot co-operative, Bontle Ke Tlhago, is a community-based business initiative which addresses the issue of youth unemployment in Diepsloot.

In discussions between Gecko and Pikitup it was decided that a pilot area should be chosen to test the logistics of the Green Neighbourhood Project, of which the kerbside recycling is part of. The pilot areas are Glenferness and Kyalami Ridge.

Gecko explained that the lack of available space for landfills is a serious problem and Pikitup is looking to address this, while assisting co-operatives to develop viable and profitable businesses.

Plastic, glass, tins and e-waste can all be recycled and need to be placed in a clear plastic bag. Paper products need to be placed in a white bag as this will ensure that they remain dry. Cardboard boxes can be placed directly next to the Pikitup bins on collection day.

The different coloured bags for plastic and paper will be delivered to all residents of Glenferness and Kyalami Ridge on 12 May.

Food waste, toxic waste, wood, polystyrene, steel, wax, batteries, plastic-coated packaging and nappies are items which will not be accepted during the recycling collection.
