Fourways residents make their vote count

FOURWAYS- They showed up in droves. South Africans committed to having a say in their country.

Two of Fourways’ considerable polling stations, Fourways High School and Norscot Manor saw early lines forming with residents set to vote.

There was a sense that residents voting were not there to be populist, or were goat-herded into voting, they were there to have a voice.

Emma and Thabi Hlongwane and Eunice Mashaba, “Our voting is our right. If you don’t vote you don’t have words. We are also part of the government.”

Sandy Nxumalo said, “Voting is something I feel I had to do. Just to have the freedom of choice.”

The young family of Nicholas, Kelly, Amy and Madison Helfrich said they were excited to vote, and if you don’t vote you can’t complain about government.

Noticeable at three polling stations, namely Lanseria, Fourways High School and Norscot Manor, was a large and jovial DA contingent as party agents charmed voters.

The ANC party agents said it wasn’t discouraging, as “The DA likes to use flash to seem bigger. We’ll still win,” they said.

A few red berets also dotted the lines.

Ward 115, a DA stronghold, seems to be under threat, as one EFF supporter said rich suburbs will soon “Be for everyone.”

IEC volunteers and workers at all three venues said there were no security threats, and voting had been peaceful.

In the Midrand constituency, led by Dion George the DA’s number one candidate to sit in the National Assembly, Ward 96 and 115 was top with new voters registering to vote today.
