Help expand education in fundraiser

JOBURG - LOve trust, which has established organisations in Midrand, is hosting a comedy, song and dance fundraiser at the Barnyard Theatre Rivonia on 22 May from 7pm and hope the community will attend.

Aika Shedrack of Love Trust explained its vision was to provide education to vulnerable children, and they need the community’s support both in terms of funds and volunteers.

She said Love Trust grew out of the desire and need to establish an exemplar for progress, concentrating especially on young children from disadvantaged environments, with special emphasis on early childhood development.

She explained how it all began in 2009, firstly with the planting of seeds in the initiative Lily of the Valley in KwaZulu-Natal to help the young who are affected or infected by HIV/Aids; and secondly with the establishment of Christ Church Preparatory and College in Midrand.

“With the combined expertise of these two endeavours, community outreach and independent education, Love Trust was established to create a model for development, focusing on vulnerable children and providing high quality education,” said Shedrack.

She said Love Trust had flagship schools Nokuphila School and Nokuphila Teacher Training Centre in Tembisa, as well as the Hillbrow Independent School to nurture children with basic fundamentals.

“So many of our children start Grade 1 lagging behind, short of the basic reading, writing, mathematical and critical thinking skills,” said Shedrack.

“Studies show that [the first] five years are the most important in a child’s development. At this point the brain is constantly creating new connections and developing at the most rapid pace. The kind of environment the child is exposed to plays a major part in their makeup.”

Love Trust partners with creches in the community, providing tool-boxes, conducting workshops and bible studies and training. She said the Nokuphila Teacher Training Centre catered to students from the community and provided them with a South African Qualifications Authority accredited Level 4 Certificate.

She explained, “The idea is to tap into and grow our human resource pool. Is this not the only way we can create a sustainable environment?”

She said Love Trust would schedule a tour of one of the schools for interested community members, or the public can help by volunteering.
