Addicted gamblers invited to workshop

JOBURG - Problem gamblers in Alexandra are invited to a workshop organised by the National Responsible Gambling Programme on 10 May.

The workshop, designed to help people understand the risks of irresponsible gambling, will be held at My Father’s House Christian Fellowship Church, 3260 1st Avenue, corner 1st and 3rd Avenue, Melville.

It will start at 11am until 4pm, but will be preceded by a praise and worship session from 10am. Addicted gamblers keen to kick the habit are invited to join the worship session and the workshop.

Many people who suffer from gambling addiction turn to the church for help, and the workshop is designed to help those in faith-based communities to identify and assist those in trouble.

The programme hopes to increase public awareness about the potential consequences of gambling and promote healthy lifestyle choices, said the programme’s executive director Nana Magomola.

“We want to ensure we do not condemn or judge, but rather help people understand the consequences of their choices in an informed and responsible way, and to reduce risks related to problem gambling and risky lifestyle choices,” she said.

The workshop is funded by the Gauteng Gambling Board and the Gauteng Provincial Government’s Department of Economic Development.

Among the speakers will be Magomola who is a lawyer, businesswoman and gender activist with a background in healthcare and government administration.

Another speaker will be Bishop Robert Kelley, founder of the My Father’s House Christian Fellowship Church, who hails from Washington DC and has worked in Africa for the past 17 years facilitating mentorship, training, and entrepreneurship for women.
