Tickets still available for six-part lecture series

Wits Art Museum has announced that tickets are still available for the upcoming six part series on contemporary African art.

The Wits Art Museum has announced that there was still space available for the six part lecture series, What is contemporary African art.

The lectures will take place from 6 May and will draw extensively on the museums collection of African art.

“The six part series will explore a wide range of contemporary art practices and is a wonderful opportunity to learn from the specialists,” a statement from the museum read.

The series will also be an opportunity to engage with people with similar interests and expand knowledge on the visual arts of Africa.

Some of the lecturers presenting the series include Prof. Anitra Nettleton, chair and director of the Centre for Creative Arts of Africa at the museum, and Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum, the museum’s research co-ordinator and a practising artist.

Dr Paul Davis, who has completed his doctorate in art history at Indiana University, will also feature in the series. Some of his research interests include a focus on visual art and culture in West Africa during colonial and post-independence periods.

Dr Laura de Becker who is a postdoctoral research fellow at the museum, will also present a lecture along with Nontobeko Ntombela, a curator based in Johannesburg. Ntombela currently works as an associate lecturer in the History of Art and Arts, Culture and Heritage management divisions at the Wits School of Art.

The exhibition will run until 10 June. The lectures will take place on Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
