Sweet and snack expo satisfies chocoholics

NORTHGATE - The highlight of the annual South African Sweet and Snack Expo held at the Coca-Cola Dome was Chef Nicholas van der Walt's exceptional chocolate paintings.

Van der Walt, who is the co-owner of the FBI Chef School and Pastry Academy in Douglasdale, created the world’s smallest edible chocolate painting and the world’s largest edible painting specifically for the expo.

“The smallest painting was actually more nerve-wracking because I had 10 minutes to complete it and all the work had to be done through a microscope,” he said. Van der Walt hopes to auction off the large painting with a starting bid of R 30 000 with the proceeds going towards sponsoring a student who wished to study at the FBI Chef School.

While van der Walt’s paintings formed the centre point for the expo, there was also a sweet or savoury snack for everyone’s tastes.

Informative cooking demonstrations and cake decorating competitions were also on offer.

From incredibly flavoured olives from Laharna Farm Products, which also exhibits at the Fourways Farmers Market, to luxurious Turkish delights and Belgian chocolates, guests were spoilt for choice.
