Birds on the brain

PAULSHOF - The Friends of Rietfontein held their first bird walk with everyone in attendance treated to the wonderful flora and fauna at the Rietfontein Nature Reserve.

Residents from areas extending from Paulshof to Lonehill were treated to an informative bird walk at the Rietfontein Nature Reserve, with guides and event coordinators Ella and John Roberts giving all in attendance a clear picture of the environmental diversity, not only the reserve, but in South Africa in general. Through their insight they brought forth and acknowledged the significance of birds in the country’s biodiversity.

Friends of Rietfontein representative Margo Bandsa said, “This first time bird walk in the reserve highlighted the importance of the contribution of the little green belt to the greater ecological cycle. The residents of Rietfontein Nature Reserve are very proud of their sanctuary in the heart of Johannesburg and will create opportunities like the bird walk to show the importance protecting and preserving this space for future generations.”

Ward councilor Stephen Moore, who attended the event, said that residents in the area should acknowledge and appreciate how blessed they are to have Rietfontein, which is a significant piece of land with a plethora of fauna and flora which hints at the great deal of biodiversity in the area. And that support and funding should be given to the reserve.

The event was ended with a competition prize giving where three lucky supporters of the reserve won tickets to a performance of Time Warp at the Barnyard Theatre.
