High achieving hound makes owner proud

DOUGLASDALE - Dog, Rafa of Royal Breed has just won 'best in show' at the Meridian Rottweiler League Championship.

Rafa’s owner, Kenneth Garvie couldn’t be prouder. “The Meridian Rottweiler League dog show is the biggest Rottweiler show we have in this country,” he said. “The best of the best from around South Africa compete for the title and in total 105 dogs were entered but the dog that won ‘best in show’ was my very own dog.”

Garvie said that Rafa of Royal Breed was imported from the Royal Breed Kennels in Serbia, hence his name.

He believes that it was Rafa’s perfect mixture of size, movement and temperament that made him the winning dog. “Most of all Rafa is a pet before he is a show dog,” he said.

Garvie described Rafa as a big softy with an unbelievable temperament. “In a showing he moves like a butterfly which is suprising since he is 70 kilograms of muscle,” he said.

Rafa trains in obedience and protection work every Sunday when he is not at a show.

“We attend shows all the time but I had a point to prove with him [Rafa],” Garvie said. “Everyone had given up on him as a show dog but I got this boy into shape and got his head right and the rest was history.”
