Michael Lowman lives for music

MABONENG PRECINCT - "I got my Dad's old acoustic guitar when I was 17, fumbled around with it, and realised music is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life."

Despite this epiphany, Michael Lowman didn’t know that fateful day would see him sign with a major record label or be chosen to support the South African leg of singer-songwriter Tori Amos’ world tour.

“I’m pretty much self-taught. I studied music for a year after school at Tshwane University of Technology,” said the Durban-born 26-year-old.

“I was 19 years old when I posted my first videos on Youtube; covers of songs by John Mayer and Damien Rice. I always had a sense it would take me somewhere.”

Lowman said he posted the videos for feedback other than from his immediate family.

“The response was great. Those videos got me noticed and took me to Las Vegas and Los Angeles, to record and play a few shows,” he said.

Known for a style that draws from the genres of blues, soul and pop, and for his honest lyrics, Lowman said he would be unwilling to compromise on the content of his songs.

“I have a wide, eclectic taste, but when it comes to the lyrics, the content, I don’t compromise. It must be honest,” he said.

In addition to various musicians, Lowman numbered his new home base as another influence in his songwriting.

“Joburg has definitely influenced my music, especially Maboneng Precinct,” he said.

“It’s a thriving place, full of potential. It’s full of like-minded individuals who believe in this city, in this country. I’d go back to the States, and I’d go to Europe, but this will always be my home. I love South Africa.”

Speaking about his upcoming opening performances for Amos, Lowman said he initially didn’t know she was coming to South Africa.

“I was contacted by her local promoter, who sent her management my music. They replied that they were keen to have me play if I was keen to play. They found me and put their faith in me, and I think this is a testament to the work I’ve put into my career so far,” he said.

“This is fantastic for me, and I can’t wait to play for Amos and for the people who love her music.”

His debut album Crayon Boxes was released by Universal Music SA last year.

Catch Lowman and Amos on 26 and 27 June at the Teatro, Montecasino, Fourways, and on 29 and 30 June in Cape Town.
