Growing frustration amongst road users

FOURWAYS - Fourways residents have become frustrated by the high volumes of traffic and the alleged lack of organisation near the Steyn City development.

Resident, Rubendra Naidoo is irritated by the severe traffic problems on William Nicol Drive due to the development.

Naidoo said the area had become a “death trap” with the roadworks lacking any form of traffic management. “They open and close lanes without considering the impact of traffic congestion,” he said.

He has requested that Metro police employ motorbike patrols along the 3km stretch from 5am to 8am and that onl Johannesburg Roads Agency officials should be in control of the opening and closing of lanes.

Spokesperson for Metro police, Edna Mamonyane said residents needed to understand that it was a road under construction and her department simply did not have the manpower to police the road.

“We can’t have officers there every 60m,” she said. “Roads users must be reasonable.”

A representative of Stefanutti Stocks Roads and Earthwork  said the high volumes of traffic was one of the reasons that the road was being upgraded and that all measures had been put in place in accordance with health and safety regulations.

The Steyn City development is located along the Juksei River between Cedar Road and William Nicol Drive and is planned to utilise almost 2 000 acres of land in an empty quarry.
