No tolerance for drinking and driving

DOUGLASDALE - The Douglasdale police have warned Fourways residents that the station has taken a zero tolerance policy towards drinking and driving.

Warrant officer Balan Muthan said that the patrols from the station have dealt with many cases of drinking and driving recently.

“On a Friday and Saturday night popular watering holes in the Fourways area are busy with residents drinking and having a good time,” he said.

“The problem comes when they then need to get home.”

Warrant officer Muthan said that Douglasdale police would be taking a zero tolerance stance towards drinking and driving with increased patrols in the area, especially near well-known bars and nightclubs.

He explained that if a driver is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol they will be tested first and if the reading on the breathalyser is over the limit, they will then be taken to a hospital for a blood test which is more conclusive.

“If the driver is under the influence they will be detained at the station until someone bails them out and will then appear in court at the next available date,” Warrant officer Muthan said.

He added that the sentence for drinking and driving can be anything from an extreme fine to having one’s licence taken away.

“You can also get a prison sentence if you caused an accident or if you have previously been caught drinking and driving,” he warned the drivers.
