This educational programme is for children aged three to six and seeks to equip them with important pre-reading skills. Active Readers is the brainchild of Gail Schimmel and Cath Alexander
According to their website, statistics show that a growing number of children are not regularly read to at home. In addition, those who are read to, are often read to by a hurried and tired parent, with the single aim of putting children to sleep. According to the founders, children need to be exposed to active reading – a process that engages with the vocabulary, pictures, meaning and comprehension of the story- in order to obtain important reading, language and story-telling tools.
Alexander said “I realised that although I was teaching at one of the country’s top girls’ schools, some of my pupils still lacked basic pre-reading skills.”
“I thought I was doing well by reading to my children every day. Then I realised that I only read at bed time and discouraged engagement with the material because I was tired,” explained Schimmel.
Active Readers helps working parents and if parents get a group of four to six children, they travel and teach them.
