Only original objectors to the development [those who submitted written, signed objections in 2010] will receive letters of notification regarding the appeal, but some people who objected may not receive their letters for a number of reasons such as postal address changes, or lost mail.
But the forum advises that residents need not wait to receive the letter to oppose the appeal.
If a registered objector from 2010, a resident can still oppose the appeal either as an individual or as part of the forum’s combined application.
For individual applications to oppose the appeal, a person needs to pay R350 and register before the deadline on 31 March.
Those joining the forum’s application don’t need to pay, only submit their full name, address, telephone number and email address before 25 March.
“The losing party in the appeal may be required to pay the costs of the appeal, which have been estimated at about R16 000. This means that the greater the number of people that oppose the appeal, the smaller the amount would be that each would need to pay should Makro win the appeal. With 200 objectors, the amount would be R80 per person. With 300 objectors, the amount would be R53 per person. This amount would only be payable should the objectors lose the appeal,” said Tamara Oberholster of the forum.
