What water is the best water?

JOBURG- With National Water Week around the corner, Peter Jordan of Fedhealth has urged South African’s to become aware of the health benefits of drinking water.

While we all know about the benefits of drinking water and how much of it we need to drink, there remains a great need for awareness on the quality and the dangers of irregular water,” he said

The 17 to 23 March marks National Water Week. While a lot has been said about the quality of water in South Africa, it should not take away from the significance of the health benefits of water.

Health professionals recommend that women drink eight glasses of water per day and that men need even more, up to 12 glasses of water per day.

Peter Jordan, Principal Officer at Fedhealth, has spoken against the drinking of fruit juice, flavoured water and sweetened sports drinks, stating “Rather eat fruit and drink water to get your fluid intake. You can always enhance the flavour of water by adding lemon, cucumber slices, mint leaves or pieces of fruit.”

“It is important to note that some people are more vulnerable to getting sick from contaminants in drinking water than others. You may be in this group if you are undergoing chemotherapy, living with HIV/AIDS or have received a transplant. Pregnant women, the elderly and children also may be at greater risk. It is always a good idea to ask your doctor about

whether you should take additional precautions, such as boiling tap water or drinking bottled water,” Jordan said.
