Summit Road a cause for concern

MIDRAND - A resident claims reckless driving and unmarked roads are the cause of fatal accidents on Summit Road in Midrand.

Paul Steyn said the Johannesburg Roads Agency has to do something before more people die.

“There are no road markings on the road, and there is no middle line separating the road. Many motorists drive on the wrong side on Summit Road, especially at night. A week does not go by without an accident. There is a huge problem here.”

Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said that there are often accidents on Summit Road.

Steinmann confirmed that between February and 10 March there had been three fatal accidents recorded on Summit Road.

On 7 February a motorcycle and motor vehicle collided; the biker died and the driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries.

On 12 February two minibuses collided and 19 people were injured; two of the 19 were in a critical condition.

On 10 March a minibus, motor vehicle and a heavy goods vehicle collided; the driver of the motor vehicle died while other people involved in the crash sustained injuries.

Ward 112 councillor Leverne Young said that Summit Road had an 80km/p/h speed limit but motorists ignored it.

“More traffic calming measures are needed for Summit Road. Residents must drive carefully and be alert when on the road,” she said.

Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane confirmed that there were fatalities police had responded to on Summit Road in the past weeks.

“We are aware that a lot of accidents happen there, our officers patrol the area like other areas and pull over reckless drivers,” she said.

Johannesburg Roads Agency spokesperson Bertha Peter-Scheepers said, “Residents need to call our hotline and report any road marking issues so that we can re-paint the markings that have faded. We will definitely follow up on the issue.”
