Safety first when selling a home

JOBURG - Selling a home could pose dangers to homeowners and agents.

But security company ADT has some tips on how curb crime during the process.

Clive Humphrey, managing director of ADT central region said that while an open day is a great way of introducing a home to potential buyers, it does present serious safety concerns for whoever is showing the property.

He advised that ahead of show day, residents should meet with their agents and be firm about the arrangements they want.

“Inform your security company that your home will be on show and ask them to have armed response stop by randomly during the open-house to check that everything is in order,” Humphrey said.

He advised that on the day of the show homeowners should lock away all spare keys and other valuables that are small enough to fit into a pocket or handbag. “Store large expensive items in a cupboard that locks and make sure rooms are well-lit by keeping blinds or curtains open,” he said.

Humphrey warned agents to encourage viewings to be by appointment only as it would be easier to handle a group at a time. “Consider having an assistant on the day who can receive prospective buyers while you are taking others around the property,” he said. “If possible, position your assistant near the front door or a front window so that they can write down the make, model and registration numbers of viewers’ vehicles.”

He added that if an agent is alone, they must never leave the front entrance to the house open while showing the home.

“Don’t be shy to ask visitors to remain with you throughout the viewing,” he added. “This prevents someone wandering off unsupervised.”
