Makro plans to appeal ruling

Makro has appealed the decision to refuse its application to develop a township on the 11-hectare site, purchased in Magaliessig in 2008.

Makro has appealed against the Mayoral Committee of Johannesburg’s decision to refuse its application to develop a township on the 11-hectare site, purchased in Magaliessig in 2008.

The proposed township would be known as Magaliessig Extension 68 and it is here that Makro hopes to build a new store.

The appeal is a second stab at a go-ahead to develop the land.

Ward 106 councillor Stephen Moore said that last year’s application refusal was not the final step to ensure that a Massmart store doesn’t pop up.

The latest appeal already has residents hot under the collar, with the Magaliessig Action Forum pleading with residents to take steps in ensuring the appeal is again overruled.

Registered letters were sent out by Attwell Malherbe and Associates, on behalf of Makro’s town planner, who lodged the appeal last week according to the forum.

The forum requested registered objectors, who do not receive a registered letter, to notify the civil group.

Other objectors, who wish to participate in a combined objection, are requested to send their name, residential address, telephone number and email address to the forum before 25 March to enable them to collate all the information for the forum’s legal advisor, who will be the residents’ representative at the appeal hearing.

Objectors are welcome to submit individual applications to oppose the appeal.

Each objection must be accompanied by R350 and submitted before the deadline of 31 March.

The forum also wants a large turnout at the hearing.

Residents who have moved into the area since the objection process in 2010 are not formally allowed to participate in the appeal, but are welcome to attend the hearing when it takes place.
