Fourways couple gives aid in Philippines

FOURWAYS- Two Fourways residents, inspired by Mandela's legacy, have made a difference to survivors of last year's typhoon Haiyan.

Although the typhoon dominated headlines in November last year, the relief work is still going on. Ian and Clavel Benfield from Fourways arrived in Cebu City in the Philippines on 7 November, a day before typhoon Haiyan struck. Fortunately the city did not suffer much damage but northern parts of Cebu island were devastated by the typhoon. The Benfields decided to do what they could to help, and with the support of friends in South Africa, England and France, they have been helping ever since.

They visited devastated areas of northern Cebu with relief supplies. Ian said that the experience was both heartbreaking and heart-warming: although it was sad to see damaged houses, schools and the environment, it was also good to see the cheerful smiles of resilient people who were very appreciative of the supplies they were given.

Since then the Benfields have made four more trips to the Philippines.

To date they have raised R163 000 which they have used to buy 3.3 tonnes of rice, 5000 tins of sardines, 4924 tins of meat, 4340 packets of noodles, 851 soap bars and roofing materials for 24 houses.
