Illegal dumpers caught

LONEHILL- A group of illegal dumpers were caught on Main Road in Lonehill, while residents have attempted to remedy the problem.

After a tip-off by a Lonehill resident on 22 February, a group of men were arrested by the Fidelity reaction team for illegally dumping waste on the side of Main Road, in between Lonehill Boulevard and the Jukskei River.

With the help of the Lonehill Residents Association the group of men were caught in the act. The driver was handed over to Douglasdale police with charges not only pertaining to dumping, but also for driving a heavy duty vehicle without a licence.

Both the driver and the owner of the vehicle were heavily fined for this offence.

A private waste representative, as an anonymous source said, “Illegal waste disposal is a danger to the environment in general, because no one knows what harmful substances are in waste. If liquid substances are disposed of illegally they could contaminate the soil and kill the grass, or even worse, they could flow into storm water drains and contaminate the drinking water in the area.”

Illegal dumping has proved to be a serious issue in Lonehill, and with measures such as hiring guards to patrol the Main Road area, the Lonehill Residents Association have been fighting – and winning – the illegal dumping war.
