After a number of incidents in the Fourways area involving the theft of copper wire, the Douglasdale police decided to target scrapyards to look for stolen copper wire.
Captain Jack Matabane of the Douglasdale police, members of a local security company, and Dumisani Khanyile and Barend Karsten of City Power searched a scrapyard on Witkoppen Road for any traces of the stolen material.
After a thorough search Khanyile happened upon a number copper wire coils hidden under an old carpet. While the foreman of the scrapyard denied having any prior knowledge of the coils, he could not produce the relevant paperwork to prove the scrapyard’s ownership.
The scrapyard was also found to have an illegal electricity connection.
Karsten explained that City Power would send electricians to remove the illegal connection and the owner of the scrapyard would be fined R1500.
Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the Douglasdale police said, “Copper theft is a serious offence and if caught you could be found guilty and sentenced to a prison term.”
