Scouting in the swimming pool

BRYANSTON- Cubs and Scouts from the Sandton District held their annual B-P Sunday and Swimming Gala last week.

The B-P Sunday service is held worldwide to commemorate the life of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scout and Girl Guide movements.

Usually the weekend closest to 22 February, which is Baden-Powell’s birthday, is selected for special activities in groups around the world.

After a short commemoration service, where all the Cubs, Scouts and adult leaders re-affirmed their Scout promise, everyone took part in a swimming gala.

While the primary aim of the gala was to give everyone an opportunity to participate and have fun, the friendly competitive spirit between the Bryanston, Rivertrail, Morningside, Parkmore, and Lonehill/Peter Place Scout groups was still evident.

Apart from swimming races, there were also a number of fun challenges.

For the Cub age group it included swimming in a t-shirt and shorts, and swimming the ball and a cork race, where each group had to collect the most number of corks floating in the pool.

The Scouts also had to build the tallest human pyramid possible in five minutes.

First Rivertrail were the final winners of the gala, with First Morningside and First Bryanston the runners up.

Scouting has been in existence for over 100 years and currently has more than 28 million members in 216 countries and territories.

In South Africa Scouting is open to both boys and girls, and offers a fun way to learn how to be the best you can be.

The Cub programme caters for children in the 7 to 10 year age group, while Scouts are for those between the ages of 11 and 18.
