Hyena almost ready for release

PAULSHOF- FreeMe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Paulshof is helping the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) to raise funds for a tracking collar for Juno, the brown hyena that was found wandering the streets of Johannesburg last year.

When the hyena was found, FreeMe along with inspectors from the NSPCA and Dr Brett Gardner of the Joburg Zoo, were on the scene to tranquilize the animal and get it to safety (‘Joburg’s hyena hunt’, Fourways Review, week ending 27 September 2013).

Juno is now in a pre-release enclosure at a nature reserve in the North West Province.

According to the NSPCA, Juno is doing very well and is gaining confidence every day. She is adjusting to her surroundings and her release date should be very soon.

Fitting Juno with a tracking collar will allow her to be monitored after her release to check on her progress to ensure her survival and gain new insight into brown hyena habits and movements.

The NSPCA has managed to raise R31 700 so far for the collar, but the total cost of the collar is R40 000 so they are still trying to raise a further R8 300.

Anyone wishing to donate money towards Juno’s collar can contact the NSPCA or transfer money directly into their bank account.
