Battered husky survives

FOURWAYS - Against all odds, Emily the husky survived after maggots started devouring the animal's flesh.

Jasper van Jaarsveld of Husky Rescue South Africa said the organisation received a distress call on 9 February to drive to Lenasia to assist a dog known as Emily.

To rescuer Abigail Strachan’s horror, they found the dog weighing only 8.5kg. The scrawny animal had a maggot infestation, chomping away at two strips of flesh on its back.

The dog was found collapsed and unresponsive, and was immediately taken for veterinary care. The next day, Strachan visited the dog. Tests for distemper and tick fever came back negative.

Rescuers were amazed the following day, when the dog was able to stand for short spurts of time.

The dog, still on drips, was also allowed scraps of solid food, but traces of worms were found in the animal’s system.

By 12 February Emily’s biliary test came back positive. The disease affects the liver of dogs.

The rescue team believes the dog will pull through, but will indefinitely be in veterinary care.

Husky Rescue South Africa is hoping for contributions to the dog’s veterinary bill.

Donations can be made to Husky Rescue SA, Standard Bank. The branch code is 02 39 10, account number 271 474 092. The reference should be ‘Emily’.
