Zuma must stop e-tolling – Outa

JOBURG - The Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa) has called on President Jacob Zuma to show "civic courage" and bring an end to the e-tolling system.

Outa asked Zuma to use the State of the Nation address on 13 February as a platform to put a stop to the contentious system that is operating in Gauteng.

“Outa calls on the president to display some civil courage in his State of the Nation speech on Thursday [13 February], by calling off the ill-conceived e-tolling system,” it said in a statement.

According to Outa, e-tolling was an “albatross hanging around his neck”.

Referring to its recent survey, which revealed that 71 percent of motorists had yet to register for e-tags, the alliance said it was evident that the system was not working.

Outa’s findings were based on a sample of 2 700 vehicles, counted during peak periods at nine on and offramps earlier in February.

Additionally, Outa claimed that it continued to receive e-tolling complaints from large fleet owners and logistic companies, especially with regards to their concerns and anger about the impact that “cumbersome administration” and the high cost of e-tolling was having on their businesses.

Meanwhile, Sanral continued to urge motorists to obtain an e-tag and register for e-tolling in order to qualify for the available discounts.
