Time to brave the shave

JOBURG - If a change is as good as a holiday, then going bald is a trip to far-off islands.

A shave for the eleventh annual Shavathon could change the health landscape by preventing many cancer cases.

Trigger-happy clippers are ready to call out to shoppers to go bare for the sake of cancer awareness.

Those with longer tresses are sought-after by the organisers, since their locks are used by Cansa to make wigs for cancer sufferers undergoing treatment.

Sue Janse van Rensburg, chief operating officer of Shavathon, said it had become one of the countries best supported and loved events.

“Losing hair is a common side-effect of cancer treatment, so shaving bald has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors,” she said.

Colouring your hair or paying a bail-out fee are other options for those who prefer to keep their appearance. Shavathon also needs volunteers from 21 February to 1 March to help at workplaces and shopping centres.

On 1 March more than 200 shopping centres will participate in Shaveathon.

Fourways Crossing, Fourways Mall, Leaping Frog shopping centre, Broadacres Lifestyle Centre, Cedar Square, Lonehill shopping centre, Chilli Lane shopping centre, Nicolway Centreand Bryanston Mall have signed up to host Shavathons. For those who want to escape the clippers, Cansa has a online site for donations.
