DIEPSLOOT- CHANGE the World Trust is a non-profit organisation which runs educational programmes for children and young adults in Diepsloot, Zandspruit and Midrand.
The organisation was launched in 2009 after a group of socially conscious people – who had previously launched successful educational projects in India, Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia – saw the need in South Africa for educational projects with a focus on practical training.
Change the World Trust specialises in the research and development of practical initiatives for the youth, focusing on information communication technology (ICT) development.
Project manager and co-founder of Change the World Trust, Natalie Emery, explained the organisation has set up information technology centres in urban, peri-urban and rural areas. There are currently six centres operating successfully in Diepsloot, Zandspruit and Midrand, as well as two centres in the Eastern Cape and one in Maputo, Mozambique.
Emery said an exciting spin-off of the project are the workshops that are now being run in high schools who do not have IT labs.
“Change the World Trust comes to the school with 20 to 30 laptops and we do workshops with teachers and pupils in the afternoons and during weekends,” she said.
Emery explained that due to a lack of training and development many young adults become frustrated in their attempt to find purposeful employment. Change the World Trust aims to compliment their core skills with free secretarial know-how, computer literacy and advanced PC technician courses so that young people can become adept and sought-after in IT integrated workplaces.
