Community cleans and greens Douglasdale

DOUGLASDALE - Residents and businesses stepped in to improve their suburb when they planted a community garden.

The Douglasdale Business forum, with residents and sponsorship from local businesses took on the corner of Witkoppen Road and Douglas Drive, across from the Douglasdale Police Station in an anti-grime initiative.

Douglasdale residents banded together to make their neighbourhood great, and when casual labourers popped by asking for work, they had to leave disappointed or pitch in and volunteer for free.

The garden is the result of financial donations from members of the Douglasdale Business Forum, the plants were supplied at cost by Palms for You Nursery, and the gift of time and effort was supplied by volunteers.

Norscot Slopes residents Kim and Graham Stevens are happy to water the garden at least once a week, while Douglasdale police will send its garden service once a week to maintain the garden.

According to Susan Mottram from Headline News and the forum, the garden took some planning, and the necessary municipal permission had to be given to ensure the planting didn’t damage any below-ground infrastructure.

The forum would like to extend the project by painting the wall behind the garden from the corner of Witkoppen Road to Swallow Street along Douglas Drive.

“To make this happen, we are looking for donations of a dove grey or olive green precast wall paint, brushes, rollers and paint trays, as well as volunteers to join us for a community painting day,” said Mottram.
