Woman arrested for mob justice murder

DIEPSLOOT - Police arrested a 28-year-old Diepsloot woman for allegedly taking part in a mob justice incident, that led to the death of a 'thief'.

The victim was suspected of robbing a paraffin shop in Extension 7 on 16 December, and was lynched by the community in a mob justice incident.

He was part of four armed men who allegedly robbed the shop of a substantial amount of cash. Members of the community immediately gave chase and

later managed to catch three of the suspects, although one escaped.

During the incident, a plain-clothed policeman reportedly caught a man red-handed assaulting the victim.

The man was charged with murder and was denied bail by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

Two of the victim’s alleged accomplices were rescued from the mob by police, and then arrested. They were charged with business robbery.

Diepsloot police are also investigating allegations that a woman, who was arrested for intimidating an eyewitness, was involved in another mob justice incident in Diepsloot.

She has been charged with murder and will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court this week.

“As much as we appreciate that residents are taking responsibility by apprehending suspects who commit crime in their presence, we will not tolerate street justice and will continue to act against [the] perpetrators thereof,” said Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela.
