Norscot Manor upgraded, despite sale threat

NORSCOT - While Norscot Manor is still under threat of being sold by the City of Johannesburg, R800 000 has been allocated for maintenance of the historic mansion.

Since December, painters and a contractor crew has been hard at work polishing the old building to make it shine again.

The building and premises was donated to the municipality in the 1970s, and has long been used as a recreation centre – a gem in Fourways, which has no municipal entities for recreational purposes.

It also features the Norscot Library.

Chris Santana, ward councillor for Ward 115, said there are also upgrades planned for the toilet facilities and library.

Some of the rooms have been painted, while floors were being re-varnished, the entire roof will be resealed, new paving is being laid, a few new parking pays are being added, electrical wiring is being replaced and plumbing is being upgraded.

The library will be closed until the end of February due to the construction and upgrades. Maintenance is expected to be completed by March.

The group Friends of Norscot Manor has been established, and is now a registered non-profit organisation dedicated to the preservation of the Manor.

The group wants the mansion to be declared a National Heritage Sight, which would stop any threat of sale.

The Manor has been a longstanding hub of community activity, and is also one of the Fourways-based polling stations for the 2014 general elections.

Santana said construction and maintenance would not affect the building on 8 and 9 February, which is the Independent Electoral Commission’s last open voter registration weekend.

After the Watercolour Society Africa closed its gallery that used to be in the Manor, the two rooms will now be used as boardrooms for staff and community members.

There is currently an appeal for the donation of office furniture to be used in the two rooms.
