New shows will light up Teatro

MAGALIESIG - The Teatro at Montecasino had a particularly successful year in 2013, and 2014 will be even better with a host of captivating productions set to take the stage.

Bryan Hill, general manager of the Teatro, is immensely proud of the theatre.

He explained that seven years ago it didn’t seem feasible to many that the Teatro could build a theatre audience in the suburbs of Johannesburg, however the theatre has since proven to be a huge success.

In 2013 the Teatro won the Leisure Options Best of Joburg Readers Choice Award for Best Theatre for the third year running.

The Teatro’s most popular shows for 2013 were the musical biopic Jersey Boys, the St Petersberg Ballet’s performance of Swan Lake, and Trevor Noah’s It’s my Culture.

It’s My Culture attracted so many patrons that Noah has been booked for another run of the show early this year. Other notable shows that will light up the Teatro stage soon are Cirque Éloize iD, which producer Hazel Feldman describes as “a kind of Tap Dogs on steroids”, as well as the highly anticipated production, The Sound of Music.

“One of the strengths of the Teatro is that we try to present a wide range of productions that appeal to different audiences. We’re contributing to the creation of a whole new theatre-going public, which is very exciting,” said Hill.

The range of productions hosted by the Teatro since it opened includes Broadway musicals, ballet, ice shows, international jazz, comedy shows, opera, gospel, rock, and electronic pop, among others, attracting an extremely diverse mix of people, many of whom have never visited a theatre before.
