Puppies – not just for Christmas

CHARTWELL- Ark Animal Centre has some friendly puppies and dogs up for adoption but the shelter warns that puppies do not make good Christmas presents.

The centre takes in dogs from all over Gauteng and homes puppies nationwide.

With Christmas coming up a puppy seems like the perfect present, but Candice Eilertsen of Ark Animal Centre stressed that puppies are not good Christmas presents because adopting a puppy is a big commitment.

She said that people needed to be very clear about their reasons for wanting a new puppy.

Eilertsen said, “Puppies take and need a lot of time. From potty training to learning to walk on the lead, getting socialised at the park and adjusting to the family life. Also remember that puppies grow up into dogs, who then can live for the next 15 years. Be sure you are aware of this fact, as getting a puppy is not a short-term commitment.”

Eilertsen added that if your lifestyle isn’t suitable for a puppy you should consider adopting or fostering an older dog instead. “There are many older dogs who have been trained, socialised, sterilised and had all the vaccinations done, ” she said.
