An influx of hailstorm claims

JOBURG - Mutual & Federal registered more than 2 400 claims since the recent hailstorms in Gauteng and the Western Cape floods.

The company is a short-term insurer that operates in Southern Africa. It is one of the first short-term insurers to launch the weather alert service to its clients.

“We have been inundated with claims since the first day of the disastrous Western Cape floods and the dreadful Johannesburg hailstorms,” said Heidi Dias, head of claims at Mutual & Federal. “We are likely to see an increase in the number of claims due to the severity of the recent hailstorm in the Gauteng region.”

The short-term insurer has received an influx of claims since October and the claims are all related to extreme weather conditions. The first Gauteng hailstorm on 11 November resulted in 856 claims being registered. The Western Cape floods on 15 and 16 November has resulted in 462 claims being registered. The latest hailstorm on 28 November has resulted in more than 1 000 claims being registered and more are expected.
