Don’t judge his book by its cover

DOUGLASDALE - He writes, and dabbles in the arts.

For as long as he can remember Douglasdale resident Gavin Hunter has shared a love for broadcasting and writing.

His newly published book Don’t judge this book by the cover describes the societal and political spectrum in South Africa with a large dose of humour and sarcasm. He pokes fun at policies such as sports quotas and affirmative action, and at the infamous car guards and street vendors.

It took Hunter about six months to complete and he said planning and finding material took up the most time. “As for the look of the book, I wanted to go for something that would grab people’s attention,” Hunter said.

He launched his book at Scoobs in Montecasino in May this year and describes the response to his book as fair, given the fact that there are only 14 people in South Africa who buy books. “The one thing I have noticed is that people are willing to laugh at themselves and the things that make them who they are,” he said. “I do get a lot of feedback and positive messages from readers telling me that they’ve enjoyed the book.”

Hunter has hosted various shows on radio stations such as TransAfrica Radio, Airmedia Broadcasting and had a feature on the Jeremy Mansfield breakfast show.

At the moment he wants to get more involved in writing and has been working on a concept novel. In between broadcasting he is also collecting material for the second edition of Don’t judge this book by the cover.
