Barbeque Downs is tops
FOURWAYS - Barbeque Downs Community, the suburb's residents' association, held their annual general meeting at Da Vincenzo restaurant and conference centre.
Chairperson of the association, Candice James opened the meeting on a festive note as it was also the association’s second anniversary.
James said within just two years Barbeque Downs had been put on the map. Some of the achievements of the association were the operation clean-up which was held in May.
Barbeque Downs was so successful in this initiative that it was the only suburb that was mentioned in the council report for Ward 93.
Another initiative that had become synonymous with Barbeque Downs was their partnership with Eco-Solutions in building owl pens behind the restaurant.
James said when the owls were released they often stayed in the area. “This is why we encourage complexes to erect owl boxes so that the owls can become fixtures in the community. So far we’ve released four barn owls and two spotted eagle owls.”
The association has also made great headway in improving the security of the suburb. James is a member of the community policing forum and is very involved in the fight against crime. The association also donated a laptop to the Midrand police for their sector manager to keep in contact with them. James said, “We don’t ignore crime and have a crime report that is constantly updated on our website. Our challenges in the suburb are to secure our boundaries better and crack down on squatters and illegal businesses. We are constantly looking for ways to make our suburb safer.”
The meeting ended on a good note with residents applauding the hard work of the committee members and the recruitment of two new committee members.
The winner of the best verge competition was also announced. Fairways took home the first prize of R5 000.
