Are you registered to vote?

ELECTION season is fast approaching and residents are encouraged to get ready to play their part.

Ward 102 councillor David Potter said it was important for everyone to cast their vote.

“Through voting, residents can get the government that they deserve,” he added.

South Africa’s 22 263 voting stations will be open from 8am to 5pm on 9 and 10 November for new registrations, changes to registrations for those who have moved voting districts since the last election, and for voters who would like to verify their details. Election officials will accept any three forms of official identification to register and vote in the next year’s national and provincial elections. These will be the green bar-coded ID book, a valid Temporary Identity Certificate or the new smart card ID.

Potter said, “It is important to register so that you can vote in the 2014 general elections, nationally and provincially. It is also important to re-register if you have moved provinces. Residents may check if they are registered by SMSing their ID numbers to 32810.”

Voting should take place sometime in April or May 2014, but no official dates have been confirmed as yet. On the Independent Election Commission’s website residents can enter the name of their street or suburb to find out where their nearest registration and voting station will be.
