Crowds flock to Johannesburg Pride

JOBURG - Several thousand people descended on Sandton Sports Club in an explosion of colour, glitter, feathers and rainbow flags for Johannesburg Pride.

JOBURG – Several thousand people descended on Sandton Sports Club in an explosion of colour, glitter, feathers and rainbow flags for Johannesburg Pride.

The event was moved to the sports club after safety concerns led to the cancellation of the event that was to take place at Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown.

The parade began at George Lee Park, moved along William Nicol Drive, turned into Sandton Drive, and from there made its way to the sports club.

Attendees were welcomed to the event by drag queen Genevieve Le Coq, and were given food for thought in an impassioned speech by activist Simone Heradien. Ward councillor Gordon Mackay delivered his speech and then the party began.

A line-up of entertainers including 5FM’s Catherine Grenfell and singer Tamara Dey ensured an afternoon of fun in the sun.

In a post on Johannesburg Pride’s Facebook page, the organisers thanked all who attended.

“It was great to see some unity in the community, although some of the negativity is still heartbreaking. We can only hope and continue to work hard at bringing the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Asexual and Queer community together,” it said.
