Follow home robberies, a common occurrence

MAGALIESSIG - Shoot-out on Troupand Avenue is not an exception.

A shoot-out occurred between two suspects and the driver of a Nigerian diplomat in Magaliessig on 28 September.

The shooting happened after the diplomat made his way to his daughter’s home from OR Tambo International Airport.

A black BMW allegedly followed the diplomat and his driver to Magaliessig, where a shoot-out occurred between the robbers and the diplomat’s driver.

Douglasdale police are still searching for three suspects in connection with the crime.

These occurrences aren’t uncommon, however. Captain Kym Cloete, spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station, said follow-home robberies usually end up as driveway robberies.

According to her, victims are often followed from banks.

She advised that drivers should be cautious if they think they are being followed, and phone 10111 if they feel ill at ease.

“They should give particulars of the vehicle, and not stop.”

According to Cloete, spotters are planted at banks to keep an eye out for people drawing large amounts of cash. The best way to combat this is to change routines.
