Taxi ploughs into three pedestrians

SUNNINGHILL - On 20 September a taxi crashed through the boundary fence of the Chilli Lane Shopping Centre and knocked down three pedestrians.

Vanessa Jackson of ER24 said, “The driver of a taxi allegedly lost control of his vehicle while he was travelling down Rivonia Road. The vehicle crashed down the embankment at the entrance of Chilli Lane and collided with three pedestrians before coming to rest down the embankment.”

She added, “Two of the pedestrians suffered critical injuries. Sadly the third pedestrian succumbed to her extensive injuries which she incurred from being trapped under the wreckage.”

Jackson reported that one of the injured pedestrians was airlifted to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care and the other was rushed to a nearby hospital by ambulance.

The driver of the taxi was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash and suffered only minor injuries.

Metro police at the scene confirmed that the driver had been taken into custody and that he claimed the accident was due to break failure.
