Comedy for the kids

MONTECASINO - Yenzani Children's Home hosted its fourth annual Comedy for the Kids evening at Parker's Comedy Club in Montecasino.

The laughter-filled line-up included Don Packett, Dave Levinsohn, Warren Robertson, Chris Mapane and comedy legend Mel Miller.

Andrea Kellet of Yenzani started off the evening by presenting a video about the history of the home.

Sanne Mirk, the founder of Yenzani, started the home in 2003 at a house in Midrand because she wanted to provide a safe haven for children who were victims of abuse. Mirk had spent years volunteering with abused children and realised they were often sent back to the homes where the abuse occurred.

With the help of patron, Supersport presenter and former Manchester United goalie Gary Bailey, the home now cares for a number of children. In 2004 Amos Masondo, the then-Mayor of Johannesburg, presented Yenzani with a Certificate of Recognition for services rendered to the citizens of Johannesburg in regions 1 and 2.

While the comedians had the audience in stitches, raffle tickets were sold with prizes up for grabs like Ster Kinekor hampers and bed and breakfast stays at Sunsquare Montecasino.

However, the biggest prizes of the night were donated by Gary Bailey in the form of two Manchester United shirts signed by six of the current players.

The shirts were auctioned off and in total they fetched R14 000 for Yenzani Children’s Home.

While Yenzani receives funding from the government for the work that they do, they are always in need of help from the community.
