BRT public consultations for Sandton and Alex routes

JOBURG - The City of Johannesburg and Johannesburg Development Agency plan to implement Phase 1C of the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit route.

Phase 1C would comprise three transport interchanges in Sandton, Alexandra and Westgate and 10 new stations, integrated with other modes of transport.

There will be stations situated in Hillbrow, Grafton, Yeoville, Bellevue, near Kes High School, Louis Botha Avenue, near the Doll’s House, Balfour Park, Corlett Drive, Bramley, Wynberg, Athol and Sandton City.

“It is important that we consult all the stakeholders along the two proposed routes to get buy in from residents and the business community,” said the agency’s chief executive officer Thanduxolo Mendrew.

“From the agency and the City’s side, we need to share information around the impact the construction phase will have on all our stakeholders.”

Mendrew said the development agency would be conducting public consultation meetings in respect of the two proposed sections.

The route includes Section 8 which connects Alexandra to Sandton.

“It starts at the corner of Pretoria Main Road and Lees Street, and crosses over the M1 Highway via a proposed flyover, and continues left into Katherine Drive, then into West Street and terminates at the Sandton Gautrain Station precinct,” said Medrew.

Section 15 starts at the corner of Empire and Victoria avenues, proceeds left at Empire and Clarendon roads and traverses Louis Botha Avenue (which becomes Pretoria Main Road) until the intersection of Lees Street and Pretoria Main Road in Wynberg.

Mendrew said construction for both sections was expected to commence in January 2014 and was anticipated to be completed in December 2015.

He warned of temporary construction-related impacts such as dust, noise and lane closures.

“Construction may also, in some cases, require moving services such as water, sewerage pipelines, or electricity and telephone lines causing temporary disconnection.”

Mendrew said notices for public meetings were distributed through the ward committees in the respective communities and community papers, to alert stakeholders on the proposed routes.

  1. I saw no notifications whatsoever and was completely taken by surprise by the lane closures yesterday. This is ridiculous!! Katherine street is the road portal into Sandton from the N3 on Marlboro! We needed more traffic lanes, not less!!
