Glitz and glam as Chile wins the polo

WATERFALL - Chile trumped South Africa at the second test of the BMW International Polo Series 2013 at Waterfall Polo Park on 25 August.

The players brought a 40-year rivalry to the field, and while the teams tied with four points at half-time, Chile dominated the match in the second half to win with nine points to South Africa’s seven.

This is the first time the Chilean team has beaten the South African Polo team in South Africa.

As Chile lifted the trophy, they thanked the community members who had loaned good ponies to the team and thanked the South Africans for their fair play.

Master of Ceremonies John Robbie said the South African team was gracious in defeat.

Captain of the South African Polo team Guy Watson congratulated Chile on their win. “The guys really brought it to us today. I thought we would be able to turn it around but in the end it wasn’t to be,” said Watson. He said the South African team was young but showed potential. Watson also extended thanks to those who had lent ponies to the Chilean team.

While the action was centred on the field, the sides of the field were something to marvel at, as spectators dressed to the nines in summer outfits were a fitting display for a day at the polo.

At half-time, the spectators were invited to help stamp the divots on the polo field which saw great excitement, and it also gave spectators a chance to stretch their legs.

Vice-president of the South African Polo Association, Mark Davies, thanked the community for attending the day and said it was a fantastic game of polo.
