Domestic violence leads to shebeen raids

DOUGLASDALE - Police believe alcohol was the fuel in the fire during an outbreak of domestic violence.

According to Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, spokesperson for the Douglasdale Police Station, the station’s officers went on a Friday night shebeen blits around the precinct in late July.

Muthan said there has been an increase of domestic violence reported, and alcohol has been to blame in many of the charges laid.

In total police were able to close the door on six watering holes serving liquor without a license during their raid.

Police also confiscated numerous cases of alcohol from the taverns.

This is as an ongoing preventive measure to stop domestic violence and assault in informal settlements.
