Hope for Klein Jukskei Spruit

CRAIGAVON - The end is in sight for Craigavon's sewage problems.

A sewer leak in the suburb was fixed on 17 July and led Johannesburg Water to identify the area’s sewerage infrastructure as in need of an upgrade.

The sewage from the leak polluted the Klein Jukskei Spruit in the suburb and prompted estate manager of Fernbrooke Estate, Mike Collier, as well as resident Stuart Spencer, to find the source of the leak.

They raised concern over the sewerage pipes that run over the Klein Jukskei Spruit between Fernbrooke and Waterford Estates, as reported in Fourways Review last year.

They have also logged calls with City Council. The pipes appear to have been broken and temporarily mended. Collier was concerned that the pipes needed to be replaced before the next rains to prevent them from breaking and more sewage spilling into the spruit.

Spokesperson for Joburg Water, Millicent Kabwe, explained there were maintenance teams that identified infrastructure that was ageing or not coping in the city.

Kabwe said, “The sewer project we will be working on in that area is at William Nicol Drive and Witkoppen Road but there will be a link to the Klein Jukskei Spruit stream between Fernbrooke and Waterford Estates on this project.”

Collier was concerned about the affect that the July sewage leak had on the stream. He said, “The problem now is that there is a large amount of sewage that has settled in the river and is polluting it and causing the smell. The sediment needs to be cleaned.”
