Singers fire up spirits of joy

MAGALISSIG - Merrow Down Country Club for the active over 50s shows that singing is good for the soul - no matter what your age.

It was a cold winter’s night in Magaliessig. The log fire crackled. June van der Meulen and Sheena Anderson were behind the makeshift bar pouring out everyone’s favourite tipple.

Roused by convener Sheila Gorman, residents of Merrow Down Country Club, together with invited family guests, packed into the large lounge in anticipation of a jolly campfire sing-a-long.

The singing was led by feisty Italian pianist Tatiana Jackson and her group of singers including two nonagenarians, Bobby Dancer and John Martin.

Martin’s vocal chords were weak from a bout of ‘flu so his son took his place, while Martin mouthed

support from the sidelines. Not quite ready to be called a choir – according to the high standards set by Jackson – the singers, dressed in checked

shirts and hats, belted out classics such as, She’ll be coming round the mountain, Pack up your old kit

bag, The Happy Wanderer, and Kumbaya.

This well-known medley cheered up the audience and evoked treasured memories. A rousing encore sent everyone off to supper warm and happy – no doubt humming a tune along the way.
