BEVERLEY - Busy road turns into a crime scene as police open fire on an armed robber.

Colonel Tinus Swart from the Douglasdale police station said the robbery of Telkom Fourways Crossing led to the arrest of three suspects, with one wounded by police.

According to Swart, the men entered the store in the early afternoon on 16 July. Security guards were able to activate a silent alarm, but not before a vehicle with some of the robbers’ loot from the store managed to speed away.

Three suspects fled on foot. A security guard tackled one and was able to disarm him.

The second armed robber opened fire on police as they arrived on the scene. Police wounded the suspect, disarmed him and he was arrested. Paramedics were on-scene in minutes to attend to the wounded suspect.

A third suspect was arrested, who was unarmed. Police are currently searching for the getaway vehicle.

According witness Matthew Tyack, there was a huge commotion on the road with police, firetrucks and emergency personal treating the suspect.

“I was driving pass the scene at about 2.30pm. There were cars everywhere and the area was congested.”

“I asked two men if there had been a hijacking and they told me the suspects had attempted to rob a cellphone store. They must have been fleeing the scene when one of them was shot or something.”

Tyack said he assumed the three men that were lying on the ground on the side of the road were the suspects because they were covered in grass and were “not exactly being pampered.
